About The Complete Beyond the Fringe

A cult classic humour title

"War's not going very well, you know. We are two down, and the ball's in the enemy court. War is a psychological thing, Perkins, rather like a game of football. You know how in a game of football ten men often play better than eleven - ?"

"Yes, sir."

"Perkins, we are asking you to be that one man. I want you to lay down your life, Perkins.

We need a futile gesture at this stage. It will raise the whole tone of the war."

From its beginnings as a revue at the Edinburgh Festival, the original Beyond the Fringe skyrocketed, via a legendary stint in the West-end and then Broadway, into the national consciousness. It was a show that would change the face of British comedy and introduce four phenomenal new talents.

This, the original script of that show, which includes Dudley Moore's musical score, is an astonishing blend of biting social and political satire, and Beckettian absurdity. It is at once redolent of a time and place - post-war, cold-war Britain - and as fresh and hilarious as any of the countless great comedy acts and routines that it has inspired over the years.

Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett were four Oxbridge graduates who banded together to write and present a satirical revue at the Edinburgh Festival in the early 1960s. After the success of Beyond the Fringe, Alan Bennett became one of Britain's most prolific and popular playwrights; Jonathan Miller qualified as a doctor, presented the BBC's The Body in Question, and is one of London's leading theatre producers. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore went on to become one of the greatest comedy pairings of all time, in the groundbreaking Not Only...But Also series, and in their notorious Derek and Clive recordings. Peter Cook died in 1995. Dudley Moore died in 2002.
