Culture and Consensus
Robert Hewison

A hard-hitting and provocative book about England Art and Politics since 1940 by one of Britain's acutest cultural commentators

A book that presents the history of the relationship between politics and the arts in Britain since 1940, showing how the search for a secure sense of Egnlish identity has been reflected in official and unofficial attitudes to the arts, architecture, landscape and other emblems of national significance. Covering everything from the establishment of the Arts Council, to the onset of punk, the beginnings of educational meritocracy to Thatcherite cuts, Hewison takes a scalpel to Great Institutions like the Monarchy and shows how the BBC and the Arts Council became entrenched as embodiments of English Establishment values.

"The energy and seriousness of Robert Hewison are awesome" (Brian Appleyard)
