Pelham Warner's How We Recovered the Ashes is an account of his captaincy of the England side during their tour of Australia for the 22nd Ashes series. England were the underdogs, with Australia having won the previous four series, and desperately needed to find a formula to offset Australian superiority. This was the first tour to be sponsored by the MCC, and the man they chose to lead England's effort was Trinidad-born Middlesex opening batsman Pelham 'Plum' Warner - an appointment that met considerable criticism in the newspapers of the time. Regardless, it proved a wise one, and he captained England to a titanic Ashes victory for the first time in almost a decade. The Preface is by author and broadcaster Marina Warner, who is the granddaughter of P.F. Warner.

About P.F. Warner Sir Pelham Warner was born in 1873, in Port of Spain. During an astonishingly successful career in cricket, he captained the first MCC tours to Australia and South Africa, and appeared in 15 Tests. In his last season he led Middlesex to a remarkable championship victory. He was the founder of The Cricketer magazine and a correspondent for The Morning Post. Knighted in 1937, he was President of Lord's, and its first ever Vice-President for life. He died in West Lavington, Sussex in 1963.
