The Stealing Steps
John Arden

A major new collection of stories by one of our leading writers

From revolutionary murmurs in 14th century Yorkshire and the love and jealousies of the Regency theatre, to unfulfilled ambitions and doubtful affiliations in modern-day Ireland, these nine stories - which include the V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize-winning Breach of Trust - display John Arden's remarkable range and depth.

Their protagonists are artists, poets, writers and storytellers. They dictate, from the margins and through time, a history not of kings and queens, but of the forces underpinning human nature.

Set in times of political and personal turbulence, peopled by characters of extraordinary vitality and passion, these are lavish, exuberant and vividly imagined tales of love, age, betrayal, and the astonishing acts of individual men and women.

"Mysterious and macabre...wonderful gamey plots'" Guardian

"A near perfect work...Arden's greatest gift with such swiftly moving content is in the apparently easy tone of his calm prose... The Stealing Steps is a magnificent collection... a work of great richness and beauty" Times Literary Supplement
